During South Africa’s Apartheid (racial segregation) years non-white South Africans were forced to live outside of towns and cities which were officially demarcated as ‘whites only’ areas. The term township took on the meaning of black township. That is areas set aside for non-white South Africans to live. Townships were underdeveloped relative to the main economically viable cities and towns set aside for whites. The Apartheid era ‘Group Areas Act', which regulated racial segregation, was set aside shortly before 1994. However, due to socio-economic factors the vast majority of black South Africans still reside in the townships.
During Apartheid it was almost impossible to legally start an independently owned pub in a Township. Thus illegal pubs flourished - known as shebeens. Now legal, shebeens still maintain a unique Township vibe and is a great place to interact with locals.
