Africa Deluxe Tours Wild Coast landscape

Wild Coast

The name “Wild coast” can be misleading. “Wild” rather carries the meaning of “underdeveloped”. The Wild Coast is the stretch of coast along the eastern side of the traditional “Transkei” region in South Africa. It is a gorgeous natural environment, comprising the signature open grasslands and hill country of the south coast, with deep ravines peppered with groves of aloe, and beautiful tidal estuaries cloaked on either bank with rich and unsullied riparian forest. There is growing pressure to build a double lane highway to connect the southern parts of the Eastern Cape to KwaZulu Natal. This is met by constant resistance of environmentalists and locals alike. Another issue is whether mining rights should be given to companies who wish to extend mining activities to this region. This is also strongly resisted by environmentalists.

Due to the lack of development accommodation facilities for tourism is very limited. The easiest accessible areas are also the most commercial and include the Wild Coast Sun (beach hotel and casino resort) and the town of Port St. Johns. The most accessible of the “wilder” section is Coffee Bay from which you can visit the nearby Hole-in-the-Wall. Venturing into the rest of the region on your own is not advisable.
