You will be collected from your Durban city or Umhlanga area hotel, from where you’ll head north - initially along the N2 highway. The drive to Shakaland should take just over 90-minutes. You’ll be returned to your hotel late-afternoon.
Shakaland is a recreation of a traditional Zulu homestead or ‘kraal’. It was created in the 1980’s as the main set for the television series (and movie version) Shaka Zulu. The series told the story of the legendary King Shaka, who ruled over a large section of Southern Africa and whose military provided major headaches for the British Empire.
Today the kraal is an authentic Zulu cultural village, where visitors are introduced to the traditional culture and history of the proud Zulu people. It represents a traditional version of Zulu culture, much - but not all - of which is still practiced today.
The village has a full-time Zulu staff that dress in traditional dress and recreate a traditional Zulu kraal for visitors. You’ll view a short introductory video on Shaka Zulu, before a knowledgeable Zulu guide will take you through the village. You’ll see how traditional beer is made and presented, spear-making, traditional Zulu clay pots - which Zulu maidens balance on their heads -, why a kraal is laid out in a certain manner, the role of cattle, etc. You’ll witness 40-minutes of high energy traditional dancing before you head for the restaurant where various South African delicacies are served.
