The 4-star Royal St. Andrews Hotel & Spa is located in Port Alfred, across the road from the Royal Port Alfred Golf Club and a kilometre up the road from the local Blue Flag beach. The original Tudor-style hotel was completed in time for the 1924 visit by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, from there the ‘royal’ designation - ditto for the golf course and club which also hosted the prince.
The hotel’s Highlander Pub has become a favourite haunt for locals over the years. After three years of extensive renovations and expansion the substantially enlarged and upgraded establishment opened to the public in 2015. The original Tudor-styled building and pub remained, though upgraded. It features a superior Honeymoon Suite and nine renovated ‘Heritage Rooms’. The expanded buildings in contemporary architectural style house fifty new rooms, as well as the fine dining Thistle Restaurant, the Paper Nautilus Deli, the spa, an outdoor swimming pool and deck and conference facilities.
In addition to its proximity to the golf course and Blue Flag beach, the Royal St. Andrews is about 1.5km from the CBD and slightly closer to the tidal Kowie River. Port Alfred is a great base from which to explore the Sunshine Coast and interior to Grahamstown and beyond. It lies almost halfway between Port Elizabeth and East London on the coastal R72, which makes it perfect for a sleepover or longer stay.

Port Alfred is known as the Heart of the Sunshine Coast, situated halfway between Port Elizabeth and East London. The Kowie River runs through the town and it is the base for the large small boat harbour and a very successful residential marina development. The town boasts a wonderful blue flag beach and a great variety of water and ocean based activities.
The Sunshine Coast in South Africa stretches from the Tsitsikamma Reserve in the South to East London in the North. Aptly named the Sunshine coast, because it boasts more sunshine hours per year than the rest of sunny South Africa. This is due to the warm Mozambique current that runs along this coast and leads to the moderate temperatures.
The Kowie River in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, has its source in the Grahamstown heights and flows southeast until it empties into the Indian Ocean at Port Alfred. The main tributaries of the Kowie are the Bloukrans, Bak- and Lushington Rivers. The estuarine section of the river stretches from the mouth for 14 km inland.
