The Apartheid Museum

The Apartheid Museum is part of the Gold Reef City theme park in Johannesburg, South Africa. This modern museum, providing a learning experience for visitors, depicts the story of apartheid: it's development, the insult and suffering it caused, the struggle of the oppressed and the ultimate resolution founded in the democratic constitution.

On arrival at the entrance court, visitors will see seven vertical columns, representing the seven pillars of the new constitution of South Africa : democracy, equality, reconciliation, diversity, responsibility, respect and freedom. On the entrance ticket you are indicated as being either white or black, there are separate entrances for blacks and for whites. The museum is designed for the visitor to experience the racially based discrimination of apartheid. As you move through the museum, there are written explanations of photo material and a multitude of documentary video clips to watch and to listen to.

The museum succeeds in giving a foreign visitor insight into what apartheid was and serves as a reminder for all South Africans to remember where they come from and what this multiracial country committed itself to in the new constitution.
