Constitution Hill, in the centre of Johannesburg, used to be the site of one of the most notorious prisons in South Africa. Many political prisoners, including former president Nelson Mandela, were incarcerated at this prison while on trial. Today the prison is a museum and a stark reminder of how human rights were abused during the years of Apartheid.
Today, South Africa is a democracy, governed by one of the most modern constitutions, with the Constitutional Court as the highest court of appeal. It is symbolically significant that it was decided to build the house of this court on the same site as the Old Fort Prison and that it was renamed Constitution Hill.
A tour of the prison and the rest of Constitution Hill gives good insight into where South Africa came from and where it is heading in establishing a new democracy.
This morning tour will give you insight into the remarkable history of the “City of Gold". The tour includes visits to The Carlton Center, the Mary Fitzgerald Square in the Center of the urban renewal site of Newtown, the Iconic Constitutional Hill and the views of Westcliff.
