South African wines are rated on par with other top wine-producing regions in the world. The majority of wine estates, over 100 in fact, are found in the Cape Winelands, which is within easy reach of Cape Town and makes for a great one-day excursion from the city. If you are a wine connoisseur you could spend weeks exploring the various estates and their excellent cultivars.
Many of the various wine estates within the Cape Winelands and elsewhere have visitor's centres that offer tours and tastings. Some offer very informative cellar tours where you are taken on walking tours through the estate's cellars and the winemaking process is explained.
Most estates offer wine tasting. For a small fee you will receive a wine tasting glass and will join a small group of other visitors in a tasting venue (lecture type setup or more relaxed environment). A wine connoisseur will introduce you to various wines produced at the estate. Introductions include aroma (nose), body and palate (taste). You then get to taste each wine after its introduction trying to pick up the different elements as explained.
You will be able to purchase wines that you like. Often estates will arrange for wines to be couriered to your home.
