Kokstad lies below Mount Currie on the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) side of the border with the Eastern Cape Province. It is located at a juncture of various provincial and national roads. Most tourists passing through do so on the N2 between Transkei and the KZN South Coast. It also links to an alternative route through the Transkei via Matatiele, as well as routes down to The Wild Coast Sun (Port Edward) and Port St. John’s.
The town was founded by Griqua leader Adam Kok in 1863. ‘Stad’ is Afrikaans for ‘city’, thus ‘Kok-stad’. Mount Currie (2,224m above sea level) forms part of the south-eastern edge of South Africa’s extended Drakensberg Mountain Range. The Town itself lies 1,302m above sea level. It is primarily known for dairy farming and its cheese industry. The Town’s main dam Crystal Springs Dam is literally fed by mountain springs. The Dam provide boating and angling opportunities while hiking and mountain biking is popular around Kokstad, with three nature reserves in close proximity.

KwaZulu -Natal is one of the nine provinces of South Africa. It is a tourism haven with attractions ranging from provincial game reserves, private reserves, world heritage sites, long stretches of pristine undeveloped beaches, scuba diving on coral reefs and the Drakensberg Mountains (a hikers' paradise) to cultural diversity and much more.
IsiZulu, the language of the Zulu People, has the most speakers of all eleven official languages of South Africa. They are a people with a proud military tradition, starting with the remarkable history of King Shaka. Even today, in modern South Africa, the Zulu nation has a king, recognized by the Government of South Africa.
A person who has isiXhosa as home language is referred to as a Xhosa. IsiXhosa is one of South Africa's eleven official languages. It is in fact, in terms of home languages, South Africa's second largest language group (17.9%) after isiZulu (22.9%). The language falls in the Nguni-language group.
