Mthethomusha Game Reserve

The Mthethomusha Private Game Reserve is situated south of the Kruger National Park with which it shares an unfenced border. The Malelane mountains dominate the landscape and the 8000 ha of the reserve is home to the ‘big five’ (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino). It contains three different ecosystems that add to the diversity of animals and birds to be found here.

The Reserve was the first to be developed in close co-operation with the local rural community, who also benefits from it. The Tribal Authority of the Mphakeni tribe, under the leadership of the late Chief Charles Nkosi, handed low potential agricultural land over to the management of the KaNgwane Parks Corporation for optimal and sustainable development. This set an example that is currently followed by most of the Private Game Reserves, such co-operation benefits nature conservation as well as local communities.

Besides wild life and birds, the Reserve also contains about 200 examples of rock art that was created by the ancient Bushmen (San) people who were the original inhabitants of South Africa. The Lodges in the Reserve offer guided bush walks where visitors can view these relics of a very ancient culture.
