Africa Deluxe Tours Long Tom Pass cannon

Sabie

Sabie is a small logging town next to the Sabie River on the mountainous escarpment of the Mpumalanga Highveld. It is centrally located near Lydenburg via the Long Tom Pass, the Panorama Route via Graskop and the Lowveld via Hazyview. The town lies amidst one of the biggest man-made forests (plantations) in the world.

Sabie is tourist friendly and popular with South African travelers. It has a good selection of guesthouses, B&B's and a middle-range hotel. Sabie offers a wide selection of informal restaurants. Most visitors to town use it as a base to explore the surrounding areas, including a number of waterfalls and hiking trails.

Although the town is not more than 120 years old its history goes back a long way. The first inhabitants migrated into these northern and eastern parts of South Africa some 2000 years ago. There is growing archaeological evidence that these tribes had an advanced social structure and technology. The Shangaan people feared the (Sabie) river for its crocodiles and strong currents, hence they named it Ulusaba, meaning "river of fear". From this arose the name for the town and river.

Mac Mac Falls

The 70 m high Mac Mac Falls is found right next to the Graskop Road, ±14km north of the town of Sabie. The Falls derived its name from of all the Scottish gold prospectors who joined others in the gold rushes in this region in the late 1800's.

Panorama Route

The scenic Panorama Route, with various viewpoints, runs along the top of a section of the escarpment between the Mpumalanga Highveld and Lowveld. It offers incredible views, we strongly recommend it. The Route may be approached from Ohrigstad or from the logging town of Graskop.
