Africa Deluxe Tours Dullstroom trout dams

Mpumalanga Highveld

The Drakensberg Mountain range runs from North to South through the Eastern region of South Africa. In Mpumalanga it divides the province into the Highveld in the West and the Lowveld in the East. This divide is best noted on the escarpment along the Panorama Route. The mountainous centre part of the Drakensberg mountain range in Mpumalanga reaches heights of more than 2000 m.

To the East, the Drakensberg escarpment forms a dramatic drop down to the Mpumalanga Lowveld. The popular Panorama Route runs along this edge and offers breathtaking views over the Mpumalanga Lowveld. Favourite viewpoints include the Pinnacle, God’s Window, World View. The Three Rondavels viewpoint gives a wonderful view down the Blyde River Canyon that runs down to the Lowveld. The Bourke’s Luck Potholes is another popular stop on the Panorama Route.

The Highveld consists of grassland with pockets of forest in between. This area produces maize (mealies), citrus and vegetables. In the higher lying regions around Belfast and Dullstroom, trout farming is a tourist attraction.

Remarkably, the district of Belfast exports tulip bulbs to Holland.
